Gemini optimization — brand visibility in Google's AI assistant
Gemini is Google's AI assistant, available on the web, in Android and across Google's products. It can ground answers in Google Search results — which means the foundations of Google visibility carry over, with a few important differences in control and measurement.
At a glance
- How it finds sources
- Can ground answers with Google Search results.
- Control token
- Google-Extended — governs Gemini training and grounding, not Google Search inclusion.
- How it shows sources
- Source links and suggested searches when answers are grounded.
- What you can measure
- Prompt sampling; referral traffic from gemini.google.com where it appears.
How Gemini uses Google Search
Gemini answers many questions from its trained knowledge, and for questions that need current or specific information it can ground its answer using Google Search. When it does, it can show sources and related searches alongside the response.
The practical implication: your Google footprint — indexed pages, Google Business Profile, YouTube content, product feeds where relevant, and the consistency of your brand facts — is the raw material Gemini works with.
The Google-Extended decision
Google documents Google-Extended as a robots.txt token (not a separate crawler) that lets publishers control whether content Google crawls can be used to train future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI — and that it does not affect inclusion in Google Search (Google Search Central).
| If you… | Effect |
|---|---|
| Allow Google-Extended | Content can be used for Gemini training and grounding |
| Disallow Google-Extended | Opts out of both — which may reduce Gemini’s ability to ground answers in your pages |
| Either | Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode unaffected |
If Gemini visibility matters to your business, weigh this carefully before blocking it.
What improves Gemini visibility
- Google indexation. Priority pages indexed, crawlable and content-rich.
- Entity consistency across Google. Your website, Google Business Profile, YouTube channel and any Merchant Center data should describe the same company in the same way.
- Clear, answer-first pages for the questions buyers ask.
- Third-party corroboration. Reviews, coverage and listings that describe you accurately.
- Fresh facts. Outdated details on any Google surface can be repeated.
Measuring Gemini
Google doesn’t provide a Gemini-specific report for site owners. Sample your core prompts in Gemini on a schedule, record mentions, recommendations, sources and accuracy, and watch analytics for referrals from Gemini where they occur.
Common mistakes
- Blocking Google-Extended without realising it affects grounding.
- Neglecting Google Business Profile and YouTube descriptions that conflict with the website.
- Assuming Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode will always show the same sources.
