Google AI Overviews optimization — what Google says, and what to do

AI Overviews appear above Google's traditional results for many questions, summarising an answer and linking to supporting pages. Google has published unusually clear guidance on how site owners should approach them — and it's mostly good SEO, done well.

At a glance

Eligibility
Indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search. No additional technical requirements.
How sources are found
Google's index, often via multiple related searches across subtopics (query fan-out).
Controls
nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what is shown.
Measurement
Clicks included in Search Console under the Web search type.

What AI Overviews are

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google results pages, with links to supporting web pages. They appear when Google’s systems judge them helpful beyond classic results — so many queries don’t trigger one.

What Google says about eligibility

Google’s documentation on AI features is direct (Google Search Central):

  • To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements.
  • There are no special optimizations necessary. Standard SEO best practices — allowing crawling, internal linking, good page experience, textual content and structured data that matches visible content — still apply.
  • You don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema markup.
  • AI Overviews may use query fan-out — issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources — which can surface a wider and more diverse set of links than classic search.

What that means in practice

Since eligibility is the same as for normal Google results, optimization is about being the most useful page for the sub-questions an Overview needs to answer:

  1. Be indexed and snippet-eligible. Check that priority pages are indexed and not blocked by nosnippet or restrictive max-snippet rules you don’t intend.
  2. Cover the sub-questions. Fan-out means the Overview for “best payroll software for startups” may also search pricing, compliance and integrations. Pages that answer those specifically have more chances.
  3. Lead with the answer. Put a direct, self-contained answer at the start of each section.
  4. Use descriptive headings and tables where they help. They make passages easier to locate and quote.
  5. Show expertise and evidence. Named authors, sources and first-hand detail support Google’s broader guidance on helpful, reliable content.

Clicks and reporting

Google says sites appearing in AI features are included in overall Search Console traffic, reported under the Web search type, and that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality. Independent research has found fewer clicks overall when an AI summary appears — Pew Research Center measured traditional-result clicks in 8% of visits with a summary versus 15% without in March 2025 data (Pew). Both can be true: fewer, more intent-rich clicks.

Controls

To limit what Google shows from your pages, Google documents nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. Note that Google-Extended controls use for Gemini training and grounding in other Google systems — it does not remove you from AI Overviews, which are part of Search.

Common mistakes

  • Buying “AI Overview optimization” that consists of adding FAQ schema everywhere.
  • Restricting snippets site-wide and then wondering why pages aren’t cited.
  • Optimizing only for the head keyword and ignoring the sub-questions fan-out explores.
  • Expecting AI Overviews on every query — many don’t trigger one.

How Prisol helps

We check indexation and snippet eligibility, map the sub-questions behind your priority queries, rewrite pages answer-first and track how often your pages are cited in AI Overviews by sampling. It’s built on our SEO and AEO work.

FAQ

Google AI Overviews optimization: frequently asked questions

Do I need special schema markup for AI Overviews?
No. Google states that no special schema or AI text files are needed. Structured data is still useful when it accurately matches visible content.
Can I see AI Overview traffic separately in Search Console?
Google includes AI Overview clicks and impressions in the Web search type totals rather than as a separate filter, so isolating them requires sampling or third-party tools.
How do I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?
Google documents the nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex controls for limiting what is shown in Search features, including AI Overviews. Google-Extended does not control AI Overviews, which are part of Search.
Why does an AI Overview cite a smaller site instead of us?
Query fan-out searches subtopics, so a page that answers a specific sub-question clearly can be cited even if it doesn't rank top for the main query.
