Google AI Mode optimization — visibility in Google's conversational search
AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience: a full AI-generated response with links, where people ask follow-up questions instead of starting new searches. It shares AI Overviews' eligibility rules, but the experience — and the opportunity — is different.
At a glance
- Experience
- A dedicated conversational mode with follow-up questions, rather than a summary above results.
- Retrieval
- Google's index, using query fan-out across subtopics and data sources.
- Eligibility
- Same as AI Overviews — indexed and snippet-eligible; no special requirements.
- Measurement
- Included in Search Console's Web totals; sampling needed for detail.
How AI Mode differs from AI Overviews
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Above traditional results, for some queries | A dedicated mode for conversational search |
| Typical questions | Quick informational queries | Longer, complex, multi-part questions |
| Follow-ups | New search each time | Conversation continues with context |
| Source discovery | Query fan-out across subtopics | Query fan-out, often broader |
| Eligibility | Indexed and snippet-eligible | Same |
Google states both features may use query fan-out and that they may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links will vary (Google Search Central).
What changes for content strategy
Because AI Mode is conversational, a single session can move from “what’s the best accounting software for freelancers?” to “does it handle GST?” to “how does it compare with Zoho Books?” to “how much does it cost per year?”. Each follow-up is another retrieval opportunity.
That rewards depth across a topic rather than one optimized page:
- Map the conversation. For each priority topic, list the follow-up questions buyers ask — eligibility, pricing, comparisons, setup, limitations.
- Answer each one clearly on the most appropriate page — a feature page, a pricing explanation, a comparison, a help article.
- Link them sensibly so related answers are easy to discover from each other.
- Keep facts current. Prices, plan names and features that change should be updated everywhere they appear.
This is classic topical authority work, and it is why content strategy matters for AI Mode.
Technical basics still decide eligibility
- Pages must be crawlable by Googlebot and indexed.
- Snippets must be allowed (
nosnippetor restrictivemax-snippetlimit what can be shown). - Important content should be in the HTML, with structured data matching visible content.
Measuring AI Mode
Google includes AI Mode clicks in Search Console’s Web performance totals, but doesn’t break them out. Use prompt sampling for your core conversations and watch landing-page trends for the deeper pages that follow-ups tend to reach.
Common mistakes
- Treating AI Mode as a single-keyword ranking problem.
- Leaving pricing, eligibility and comparison questions unanswered “so prospects will call”.
- Hiding key facts in PDFs, images or interactive widgets that aren’t readable as text.
How Prisol helps
We map the conversations around your priority topics, find gaps where follow-up questions have no clear answer on your site, and fill them with focused pages — then sample AI Mode responses to track citations over time.
