ChatGPT optimization — improving how ChatGPT finds and describes your brand
ChatGPT is where many buyers now start research — asking for shortlists, comparisons and explanations. When it searches the web, it decides which sources to read and cite. This guide explains how that works and what improves your chances of being found and described accurately.
At a glance
- How it finds sources
- Third-party search providers plus OpenAI's own OAI-SearchBot crawler and partner content.
- Crawler to allow
- OAI-SearchBot for search inclusion. GPTBot (training) is a separate decision.
- How it shows sources
- Inline links and a sources panel when it searches; no citations when it answers from training alone.
- What you can measure
- Referral traffic from chatgpt.com, plus repeated prompt sampling.
How ChatGPT answers questions
ChatGPT can answer in two ways. For many general questions it answers from what the model learned in training — no live search and no citations. For questions about products, recent events, local information or anything it judges to need current information, it searches the web, reads results and writes an answer with links.
OpenAI has said ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers as well as content provided directly by partners, and documents its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, as the bot that surfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search features (OpenAI). Queries are typically rewritten into one or more searches before results are read.
The three OpenAI crawlers — and which matter
| Crawler | Purpose (per OpenAI) | Effect of blocking |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfaces sites in ChatGPT search | Your pages may not appear as search answers |
| GPTBot | Collects content that may train future models | Opts out of training; does not block search |
| ChatGPT-User | Fetches pages when a user’s request needs them | Robots rules may not apply to user-initiated fetches |
If visibility in ChatGPT matters to you, check that OAI-SearchBot is allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by your CDN or firewall’s bot settings — a common, silent problem.
What influences whether you appear
OpenAI doesn’t publish a ranking formula, so treat these as evidence-based principles rather than guaranteed factors:
- Retrievability. Your pages need to be crawlable and present in the indexes ChatGPT’s search draws on.
- Direct, specific answers. Passages that answer a question clearly — with numbers, names and steps — are easier to use than general marketing copy.
- Third-party description. For “best”, “top” and “vs” questions, ChatGPT often relies on review sites, comparisons and articles. If they don’t mention you, answers often won’t either.
- Consistent brand facts. Conflicting descriptions across the web lead to confused or outdated answers.
- Freshness. For time-sensitive questions, current information is favoured; stale pages and listings get repeated as stale facts.
A practical ChatGPT visibility checklist
- OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and CDN bot rules
- Key pages indexed in Google and Bing, with content in the HTML (not only in JavaScript)
- A clear “what we do / who it’s for” page and accurate pricing or pricing-model explanation
- Comparison and alternatives pages written fairly and factually
- Consistent company description across site, LinkedIn, directories and review platforms
- Presence on the review and comparison sources ChatGPT cites in your category
- A fixed prompt set sampled monthly, with cited sources recorded
Measuring ChatGPT visibility
There is no ChatGPT equivalent of Search Console. Measure with:
- Referral traffic from chatgpt.com in analytics (often tagged
utm_source=chatgpt.com). - Prompt sampling — your core questions run several times a month, recording mentions, recommendations, citations and accuracy.
- Self-reported attribution — add “AI assistant (e.g. ChatGPT)” to “How did you hear about us?”.

Common mistakes
- Blocking OAI-SearchBot by accident with a broad “block AI bots” rule.
- Treating one screenshot as proof of visibility — answers vary between runs and users.
- Publishing pages “for ChatGPT” full of keyword-stuffed Q&A rather than genuinely useful answers.
- Ignoring the third-party sources that shape ChatGPT’s shortlists.
How Prisol helps
We audit crawler access, sample your buyer prompts in ChatGPT, map the sources it cites, and then improve the inputs: technical access, answer-first content, entity consistency and third-party presence. We report the trend with our method attached — and we don’t promise placement.
