Microsoft Copilot optimization — visibility through Bing
Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant — in Bing, Edge, Windows and Microsoft 365. For web answers it relies on Bing's index, which many SEO programmes neglect. That makes Copilot one of the more actionable AI platforms: the route to visibility runs through tools you can actually use.

Copilot runs on Bing
Microsoft describes Copilot’s web answers as grounded in Bing search: the question is turned into searches, Bing returns results, and the model writes an answer with linked references. If Bing hasn’t indexed a page — or has indexed an outdated version — Copilot can’t use it.
Many SEO programmes check Google thoroughly and Bing barely at all. For Copilot visibility, that gap matters.

The AI Performance report is a rare piece of first-party AI citation data. Note its limits: it shows citations, not clicks, and it doesn’t cover non-Microsoft assistants.
What improves Copilot visibility
- Bing indexation. Verify, submit sitemaps, fix crawl errors and keep content in HTML.
- Fast updates. Use IndexNow so changed prices, products and facts are recrawled quickly.
- Clear answers. Specific, self-contained passages under descriptive headings.
- Entity consistency. Matching company information across your site, LinkedIn (part of Microsoft) and listings.
- Third-party presence. Reviews and coverage on sources Bing ranks for your category.
Measuring Copilot
- Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance — citation counts and grounding queries.
- Prompt sampling — for recommendation and accuracy, which the report doesn’t capture.
- Referral traffic — visits from copilot.microsoft.com and bing.com in analytics.
Common mistakes
- Never verifying the site in Bing Webmaster Tools.
- CDN rules that challenge or block Bingbot.
- Letting Bing’s index fall out of date after a migration.
- Treating Copilot citation counts as traffic — the report has no click data.
