Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative engine optimization (GEO) services: earn your place in AI answers

AI answers are assembled from what the web says about a topic — including what others say about you. GEO works on that wider picture so your brand is mentioned, cited and recommended for the right reasons.

The problem

Why strong brands still go unmentioned

  1. 01 AI answers in your category cite review sites, directories and comparison articles where your brand does not appear.
  2. 02 Your company is described differently on your site, LinkedIn, business listings and press coverage, so there is no clear, consistent picture to draw on.
  3. 03 Your content repeats the consensus, so there is nothing distinctive to cite you for.
  4. 04 Nobody is watching what AI answers say about you, so errors persist.

Explained

What generative engine optimization means

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of improving how AI systems that generate answers represent your brand: whether they mention you, cite your pages, describe you accurately and include you when recommending options. The term was popularised by academic research in 2023–24 that tested how content changes affect visibility in generative search responses.

What GEO works on

  • Entities. AI systems build answers about companies, products and people. Consistent names, descriptions, facts and relationships make you easier to describe correctly.
  • Original information. Content that adds something new — data, research, first-hand experience, a clear framework — gives answers a reason to cite you rather than a competitor who says the same thing.
  • Third-party references. Much of what AI answers say about a category comes from sources other than vendors’ own sites: reviews, comparisons, news, forums and directories.
  • Monitoring. Because answers change, measurement is continuous and sample-based. See AI visibility.

What GEO is not

It is not prompt injection, hidden text for bots, mass-produced “AI-friendly” pages or buying placements in content farms. These tactics risk penalties in search, damage trust with readers and are increasingly filtered out. Durable visibility comes from being a genuinely useful, well-referenced source.

Prisol’s approach

Our Generative Engine Optimization approach

Clarify the entity

We make sure your company, products and people are described consistently — on your site, in structured data and on the third-party profiles you control.

Create citable assets

Original research, data, definitions, frameworks and tools give other publishers and AI systems a specific reason to reference you.

Earn presence where answers look

We identify the sources AI answers in your category already cite and pursue genuine inclusion — through PR, expert contribution, partnerships and listings — never through spam.

Monitor the answers

Repeated prompt sampling shows whether mentions, citations and descriptions are improving across platforms.

Deliverables

Generative Engine Optimization deliverables

Scope is agreed per engagement. These are the standard components.

  • Entity audit

A review of how your brand is described across your site, schema, profiles, directories and coverage, with a correction plan.

  • Citation source analysis

The domains and pages most often cited in AI answers for your topic, and your presence on them.

  • Original research programme

Planning, execution support and publication of data or studies that others can cite.

  • Digital PR & outreach

Pitching your expertise and research to relevant publications, podcasts and industry resources.

  • Third-party profile optimization

Accurate, complete profiles on the review platforms, marketplaces and directories that matter in your category.

  • AI answer monitoring

Prompt-level tracking of mentions, citations, sentiment and accuracy across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.

Process

Our Generative Engine Optimization process

  1. Step 1

    Discover

Define the prompts and buyer questions that matter, and baseline current answers.

  2. Step 2

    Analyze

Map cited sources, entity inconsistencies and content gaps against competitors.

  3. Step 3

    Optimize

Fix entity data, publish citable assets and build genuine third-party presence.

  4. Step 4

    Measure

Track changes in mentions, citations and accuracy across repeated samples.

In practice

Generative Engine Optimization example scenarios

Illustrations of the kind of work involved — not client results.

An honest limit. GEO is a young discipline. Research into how generative engines choose sources is ongoing and platforms change frequently, so we favour practices that also make sense for human readers — accuracy, originality and genuine reputation — over tactics that try to manipulate models.

Turning expertise into a citable asset

An agency's internal benchmark of page-speed results across client sites is anonymised and published as a short study, giving journalists and AI answers a concrete source.

Closing a listing gap

Category answers repeatedly cite two software review platforms on which a client has no profile. Creating and maintaining complete, accurate profiles closes the gap.

FAQ

Generative Engine Optimization FAQs

Is GEO the same as LLM optimization?
Largely, yes. LLM optimization (LLMO) and generative engine optimization describe the same goal: improving how large language model products such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot mention, describe and cite your brand. We use GEO as the umbrella term and treat LLM optimization as part of it.
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how generative AI systems — such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot — mention, cite and describe your brand in the answers they write. It focuses on entity clarity, citable original content and genuine third-party references.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO optimises your pages to rank in a list of results. GEO optimises how your brand is represented across the sources AI systems draw on, including sites you do not own. Strong SEO remains a prerequisite, because AI search tools retrieve web pages.
How do AI search engines cite websites?
AI search products that browse typically run one or more searches, retrieve a set of pages, generate an answer from them and link some of those pages as sources. Pages that are accessible, clearly written and directly relevant to the question are more likely to be retrieved and used. The precise selection logic is not published.
Can you guarantee we will be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. AI answers vary by prompt, by user context and over time, and no one outside the platform controls them. We work on the inputs and measure the trend.
