Platforms

Optimizing for AI search platforms — one strategy, six different engines

ChatGPT, Google's AI features, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot all write answers from web sources — but they don't find, choose or show those sources the same way. These guides explain each platform and what you can realistically do.

At a glance

Shared foundation
Crawlable, indexable pages with specific answers and consistent brand facts help on every platform.
Different retrieval
Google's AI features use Google's index; Copilot uses Bing's; ChatGPT and Perplexity combine their own crawling with other sources.
Different citations
Some number every source inline; others show a few links. Being used and being credited are not the same.
Different measurement
Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools report some AI-feature data. For the rest, you sample.

Why platforms differ

All of these products combine a large language model with some form of retrieval. But each one makes different choices:

Platform Where it retrieves from (per public documentation) How sources are shown What the platform reports to site owners
Google AI Overviews Google Search index Supporting links in and beside the overview Included in Search Console (Web)
Google AI Mode Google Search index, with query fan-out Links throughout a conversational answer Included in Search Console (Web)
ChatGPT Third-party search providers, OAI-SearchBot crawling, partner content Inline source links and a sources panel Referral traffic only
Perplexity Own index (PerplexityBot) plus live fetches Numbered citations on most answers Referral traffic only
Gemini Can ground answers with Google Search Source links when grounded None specific to Gemini
Microsoft Copilot Bing web index Linked references Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance (preview)

The practical consequence: being well indexed by Google helps with AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini; being well indexed by Bing helps with Copilot; allowing the right crawlers matters for ChatGPT and Perplexity.

The shared foundation

Before platform-specific work, every brand benefits from the same four things:

  1. Access — important pages are crawlable, indexable and render their content in HTML.
  2. Answers — pages state specific, self-contained answers to the questions buyers ask.
  3. Entity clarity — your brand facts are consistent across your site, profiles and listings.
  4. Authority — credible third parties mention and describe you accurately.

Start there, then use the platform guides to check the details.

FAQ

AI search platforms: frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate strategy for each AI platform?
You need one strategy with platform-specific checks. Most of the work — technical access, answer-first content, entity consistency and authority — helps everywhere. The differences are in crawler access, indexing routes and measurement.
Which AI platform matters most?
It depends on your buyers. Google's AI features reach the largest audience; ChatGPT is widely used for research; Copilot matters in Microsoft-centric workplaces; Perplexity is popular with research-heavy users. Your prompt sampling will show where your category is discussed.
Can any agency guarantee placement in AI answers?
No. Platforms control their answers, and answers vary between runs. Be wary of anyone offering guaranteed AI rankings.
