ChatGPT vs Perplexity: how their search experiences differ for brands
Both answer questions with sources, and both are popular for research. But they find, use and display sources differently — which changes how you diagnose and improve visibility on each.

Side by side
| ChatGPT | Perplexity | |
|---|---|---|
| Product type | General AI assistant with search | Answer engine built around search |
| When it searches | When it judges a question needs current or specific information | For most questions |
| Source discovery (per vendor docs) | Third-party search providers, OAI-SearchBot, partner content | Own index via PerplexityBot, plus user-initiated fetches |
| Crawler to allow | OAI-SearchBot (GPTBot is for training) | PerplexityBot |
| Citation display | Inline links and a sources panel when it searches | Numbered citations on most answers |
| Without search | May answer from training alone, without citations | Rarely answers without sources |
| Site-owner reporting | None; referral traffic only | None; referral traffic only |
Product behaviour changes often; this reflects public documentation as of October 2026.
What this means in practice
Diagnosis: Perplexity’s prominent citations make it the easier platform to audit. If you want to know which sources shape answers in your category, start there — then check whether ChatGPT relies on similar sources.
Training versus retrieval: ChatGPT may answer some brand questions from what its model learned in training, with no live search. That makes long-term consistency of your brand facts across the web especially important there.
Crawler policy: Allow both OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot if you want visibility on both. Blocking GPTBot is a separate, training-related decision.
Verdict
Optimise the shared foundations once — access, clear answers, consistent facts, third-party presence. Use Perplexity’s citations to diagnose, and sample both because your audience may use either.
