What is AI Mode?

Also called: Google AI Mode

In simple terms

Google's conversational search experience, where an AI-generated answer with links replaces the list of results and users can ask follow-up questions.

AI Mode explained

AI Mode is a dedicated AI search experience within Google Search, designed for longer and more complex questions. It produces a conversational answer with links and keeps context across follow-up questions.

Google says the same eligibility rules apply as for AI Overviews — indexed and snippet-eligible, no special optimization — but notes that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so their responses and links can differ. Both may use query fan-out.

For content strategy, AI Mode rewards covering the follow-up questions in a topic, not just the opening query.

AI Mode: an example

In AI Mode, someone asks "compare three accounting tools for freelancers", then follows up with "which handles GST invoices?" without starting a new search.

Why it matters for search and AI visibility

Follow-up questions create more retrieval opportunities, rewarding sites that cover a topic in depth.
