Topical Authority explained
Topical authority is not a score any search engine publishes. It’s a practical description of sites that cover a subject comprehensively and accurately, from genuine expertise, and that others reference on that subject.
It’s usually built with topic clusters: a hub page for the core subject, focused pages for important sub-questions and clear internal links between them, maintained as the subject changes.
Volume alone doesn’t create authority. Many thin pages targeting keyword variations can dilute it.
Topical Authority: an example
A tax software company with clear, current guides on every GST question its customers ask is more likely to be ranked and cited on GST topics than one with a single overview page.
Why it matters for search and AI visibility
Depth across a topic gives search engines and AI systems more reasons — and more retrieval opportunities — to use your content.
