What are Brand Mentions?

Also called: unlinked mentions

In simple terms

References to your brand on websites you don't own — whether or not they include a link to your site.

Brand Mentions explained

A brand mention is any reference to your brand on a third-party page: in an article, review, directory listing, forum thread, podcast transcript or comparison list. Mentions can be linked (with a hyperlink to your site) or unlinked.

For search rankings, links have long been an important signal. For AI answers, the text describing your brand matters regardless of links: an answer that recommends a product is often summarising what the retrieved sources say about it.

Mentions are only as valuable as what they say and where they appear. A mention on a source AI answers actually cite, describing you accurately, is worth far more than many mentions on low-quality pages.

Brand Mentions: an example

A trade magazine article that names your company as a specialist in cold-chain logistics, without linking to your website, is a brand mention.

Why it matters for search and AI visibility

AI answers often draw on third-party sources when describing and recommending brands, so what others say about you shapes your AI visibility.
