Backlinks vs brand mentions: what matters for search and AI?

For twenty years off-page SEO meant links. AI answers changed the question: they summarise what sources say about you, linked or not. Both still matter — for different reasons.

Side by side

Backlinks Brand mentions
Definition A hyperlink to your site A reference to your brand, linked or not
Search role Discovery and an authority signal Supporting signal; context for entity understanding
AI answer role Indirect (helps pages rank and be retrieved) Direct — answers summarise what sources say
Quality markers Relevance, editorial placement, natural anchor text Accuracy, source credibility, relevance to buyers
Spam risk Link schemes violate Google’s spam policies Fake reviews and spam posts violate platform rules
Measured with Referring domains, link tools Mention monitoring, AI prompt sampling

The overlap

The best references are both: an editorial article in a relevant publication that describes your company accurately and links to you. That’s why digital PR serves search and AI visibility at once.

Where they diverge

  • A review platform listing may carry little link value but appear constantly in AI answers’ sources.
  • A link from a high-authority page about an unrelated topic may help rankings marginally but say nothing useful about your brand.

Verdict

Don’t choose. Earn relevant editorial links for search, and accurate mentions on the sources AI answers rely on. Measure them separately, and avoid both link schemes and fake reviews.
