Zero-Click Search explained
A zero-click search ends without a click to an external website. Zero-click behaviour predates AI — featured snippets, knowledge panels and instant answers all enable it — but AI summaries extend it to more complex questions.
Independent research has measured fewer clicks when AI summaries appear: Pew Research Center found a traditional result was clicked in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, in March 2025 U.S. data. Google disputes such findings and says AI-feature clicks are higher quality.
The strategic response is to measure visibility within answers, focus on content that still earns clicks (decisions, comparisons, depth) and track branded demand.
Zero-Click Search: an example
Someone searches "GST rate on restaurant bills", reads the AI Overview and leaves — a zero-click search.
Why it matters for search and AI visibility
As more answers appear directly in results and chat, being named and cited inside the answer matters alongside the clicks that remain.
