How to earn citations in AI answers
Evidence-based ways to make your pages more likely to be cited in AI answers from Perplexity, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Copilot — and what to avoid.
What an AI citation is
An AI citation is a link to a source shown alongside an AI-generated answer — Perplexity’s numbered references, the supporting links in Google AI Overviews, the source links in ChatGPT search or Copilot. A citation means your page was retrieved and judged useful enough to credit.
Citations are different from brand mentions. You can be cited without being named in the answer text, and named without being cited.
Why some pages get cited
No platform publishes its citation logic. But the way retrieval-augmented answers work — retrieve candidate pages, read them, write an answer, credit sources — points to a consistent set of qualities. Academic research on generative engine optimization also tested content changes such as adding statistics, quotations and citations to sources, and found they could increase a source’s visibility in generated responses (Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, 2023).
Eight practical ways to earn citations
1. Be retrievable
Check that the crawlers you care about — Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot — can access your pages, and that your CDN isn’t challenging them. Key content should be present in the HTML.
2. Answer the specific question
Pages are cited for passages, not for being generally relevant. A heading that matches the question and a direct two-sentence answer beneath it is the most citable unit you can write.
3. Add facts that others don’t have
Original data, first-hand testing, precise specifications, clear definitions and worked examples give an answer a reason to credit you rather than a page that repeats the consensus.
4. Show your evidence
Cite primary sources, state dates and sample sizes, and explain methods. Evidence makes a passage safer to use.
5. Cover the sub-questions
AI systems often break a question into several searches. A topic covered across well-linked pages — definition, how-to, pricing, comparison, limitations — offers more retrieval opportunities.
6. Keep it current
Update facts that change and show the update date. For time-sensitive questions, stale pages are passed over or, worse, quoted with outdated facts.
7. Make the page easy to read
Short paragraphs, descriptive subheadings, tables for comparisons, numbered steps for processes. What’s easy for people to scan is easy to extract.
8. Be the cited source for your own facts
When answers state facts about your company, the best source is your own clear page — pricing, features, locations, leadership. If it doesn’t exist, answers cite someone else’s version.
A quick citation audit
- Run 10 priority questions in Perplexity (which shows citations clearly) and Google AI Overviews.
- Record which pages are cited for each.
- For questions where a competitor or publisher is cited instead of you, compare their passage with yours: more direct? more specific? more current?
- Improve your page and re-check in a month.
What to avoid
- Hidden instructions or text aimed at AI systems — manipulative and increasingly filtered.
- Mass-produced Q&A pages with generic answers.
- Fabricated statistics — they may be quoted once and damage trust permanently.
- Blocking AI search crawlers while wondering why you’re not cited.
