What goes in an llms.txt file

The llms.txt proposal describes a short Markdown file at /llms.txt with a fixed order: an H1 with the site name, a blockquote summary, optional paragraphs of detail, then H2 sections of links written as - [Title](URL): note. A section called Optional holds links that can be skipped. This generator produces exactly that structure.

Make it useful, not long

  • Lead with a factual one-line description — the same wording you use on your homepage, About page and profiles. Consistency helps AI systems describe you accurately.
  • Link to pages that answer real questions: services, pricing, documentation, policies, contact.
  • Keep notes short and literal. This is a reference, not marketing copy.

Set expectations

Publishing llms.txt takes minutes, which is why we recommend it — Prisol publishes its own. But no major AI search platform has confirmed using it to choose sources. What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed convention (llmstxt.org) for a plain Markdown file at the root of a website that summarises what the site is about and links to its most useful pages, so AI tools can find the right content quickly.
Do ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity use llms.txt?
None of the major AI search platforms has publicly confirmed using llms.txt to choose sources as of October 2026. It is cheap to publish and some developer tools and agents read it, but it is not a ranking or citation factor you can rely on. Crawl access, clear pages and third-party reputation matter far more.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access. llms.txt doesn’t grant or block anything — it is a curated summary and reading list.
What should I include?
A one-line description of your organisation, a few factual details (what you do, where, for whom), and links to the pages that best answer common questions: services, pricing, documentation, policies and your most useful guides. Keep it accurate and up to date.
