SEO: being findable

Search engine optimization makes a site crawlable, indexable, relevant and trusted, so its pages appear for valuable searches. It includes technical work (crawling, rendering, speed), on-page work (titles, content, internal links) and authority (earned links and mentions).

Example: fixing a JavaScript-rendered product catalogue so Google can index it, then improving category pages so they rank for buyers’ searches.

AEO: being the answer

Answer engine optimization works at the level of the passage. Answer engines — featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice assistants, AI chat — look for a clear, self-contained answer to a specific question. AEO makes sure that answer exists on your page, near the top of the relevant section, in plain language, with evidence.

Example: a pricing page that opened with three paragraphs of brand story is rewritten to state the plans and price ranges in its first two sentences, with a comparison table below.

Generative engine optimization recognises that AI answers are assembled from many sources, not only yours. It covers entity clarity (consistent brand facts), original information worth citing, and presence on the third-party sources AI answers use — reviews, comparisons, news, directories, communities.

Example: a software brand missing from “best tools” answers finds those answers cite two review platforms; it completes accurate profiles there and invites genuine customer reviews.

How they fit together

Think of them as layers. SEO gets your pages into the indexes AI systems retrieve from. AEO makes those pages useful once retrieved. GEO makes sure the rest of the web tells a consistent, favourable story when answers look beyond your site. Weakness in a lower layer limits the layers above it.

Verdict

  • Choose SEO focus when pages aren’t indexed, ranking or getting traffic.
  • Choose AEO focus when you rank but aren’t quoted or cited for questions you answer.
  • Choose GEO focus when you’re cited but rarely recommended, or AI answers describe you wrongly.

Most businesses need all three, in that order of priority.

FAQ

SEO vs AEO vs GEO: frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI search products retrieve web pages, so pages that can't be found by search systems are unlikely to be used. GEO extends SEO to cover how AI answers represent your brand.
Which should a business start with?
Usually SEO fundamentals (crawlability, indexation, clear pages), then AEO on priority pages, then GEO work on entity consistency and third-party presence. An audit shows where your biggest gap is.
Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
They overlap but differ in scope. AEO focuses on answer quality on your own pages; GEO covers your brand's representation across the wider web. See our AEO vs GEO comparison.
