Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): definition

Also called: GEO, LLM optimization (LLMO)

In simple terms

Improving how AI systems that write answers mention, cite and describe your brand — through clear entities, original information and credible third-party references.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) explained

Generative engine optimization (GEO) was popularised by a 2023 academic paper of the same name, which tested how changes to source content affected visibility in generative search responses. The term is now used for any deliberate work to improve a brand’s presence in AI-generated answers.

GEO typically covers three areas: entity clarity (consistent facts about your brand), original information (data, research and clear frameworks worth citing) and third-party references (being present and accurately described on the reviews, comparisons, news and directories AI answers rely on). It also includes monitoring how answers describe you over time.

GEO is not prompt injection, hidden text or mass-produced pages; those tactics risk penalties and are increasingly filtered.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): an example

A SaaS brand absent from "best tools" answers finds those answers cite two review platforms where it has no profile; creating accurate profiles there is GEO work.

Why it matters for search and AI visibility

Much of what AI answers say about a category comes from sources other than vendors' own sites. GEO works on that wider picture.
