What is Citation Share?

Also called: AI citation share

In simple terms

The proportion of sources cited in sampled AI answers that are your own pages.

Citation Share explained

Citation share measures how often your domain appears among the sources cited in AI answers for a defined set of prompts, compared with all cited domains.

It is most directly influenced by your own content: retrievable pages with clear, specific, current answers. That makes it a good indicator for AEO and technical work, while mention and recommendation share reflect broader authority.

Analysing which other domains take citation share is equally valuable: it reveals the review sites, publishers and communities that shape answers in your category — targets for brand mention building.

Citation Share: an example

Across 1,200 sources cited in sampled answers about your category, 84 are your pages — a 7% citation share.

Why it matters for search and AI visibility

Citation share shows whether your content is being used as evidence — a different signal from being mentioned or recommended.
