Answer engine optimization: how to write answers machines can extract
A practical guide to answer engine optimization — how to structure pages so search and AI engines can find, extract and attribute your answers.
Why passages matter more than pages
Traditional search ranks pages. Answer engines — featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice assistants and AI chat tools that browse — mostly work with passages: a paragraph, list or table that responds to the question asked. A page can rank and still never be quoted if no passage on it answers the question clearly.
Seven principles of answer-ready content
1. Put the answer first
Open each section with a direct, one- or two-sentence answer to the question in its heading. Then add the nuance, evidence and examples. Readers who only need the answer get it immediately; those who want depth keep reading.
Weak: “In today’s fast-moving digital landscape, many businesses are asking about…”
Strong: “Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so that search and AI engines can extract a direct answer to a question and attribute it to you.”
2. Use headings that state the question or the point
“Pricing” tells a machine little. “How much does a technical SEO audit cost?” or “Technical SEO audits typically take two to four weeks” tells it exactly what the following passage covers.
3. Make passages self-contained
Avoid “as mentioned above” and “this”. A passage should still make sense when lifted out of the page and shown on its own — because that is exactly what an answer engine may do.
4. Prefer specifics to adjectives
Numbers, names, dates, steps, ranges and examples are extractable. “Industry-leading”, “innovative” and “best-in-class” are not. If you cannot be specific, say what it depends on.
5. Use the right format for the information
- Steps → numbered list
- Options compared on several attributes → table
- Definitions → one clear sentence, then elaboration
- Pros and cons → two short lists
6. Show why the answer can be trusted
Named authors with relevant experience, a published or reviewed date, links to primary sources and first-hand detail all help readers judge reliability — and they are consistent with what search engines describe in their guidance on helpful, reliable content.
7. Make sure the text is in the HTML
Some crawlers do not execute JavaScript the way a browser does. Content that only appears after client-side rendering, inside closed tabs that load on click, or in images may be invisible to them. Check your important pages with JavaScript disabled.
Where FAQ sections fit
FAQ sections are useful when they answer real questions people ask and the answers are not covered elsewhere on the page. They are not a substitute for well-structured primary content. Note that since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for a limited set of authoritative government and health sites, so FAQ markup should not be added in expectation of a special display.
A quick AEO audit you can run today
- List the five questions each of your key pages should answer.
- For each, find the passage that answers it. Is it in the first lines of its section?
- Read that passage on its own. Is it complete, specific and accurate?
- Disable JavaScript and reload the page. Is the passage still there?
- Is it clear who wrote the page and when it was last checked?
